Masterful Mindsets ~ Don’t Just Make The List – Live By It!
“Words are just words until you put them into action. Then they can become the character traits that you live by.” ~ Michelle Weimer
Question:
Do you have your list of character traits you want to possess? Do they contain traits you are already strong in? Do they contain traits you wish you had? So now what are you doing with that list?
Action Challenge:
Today’s Masterful Mindset is the last in our mini series on Character. I hope that you’ve gotten some insights about the character traits you most wish to possess.
If you’ve been following along the last few weeks, then by now you should have a great list started. But, it’s not just about making a list, it’s about living by those character traits.
So, if you don’t already have a plan in place for how you will practice those character traits regularly, in order to begin to make them a powerful part of who you are and how you will show up in the world, you’re in luck today.
To end this series, I want to give you a practice that will help you keep those character traits front and center in your mind, which in turn will help you begin to look for opportunities to exhibit them more regularly.
- Look through your list and pick 3-5 traits that you already possess. They may even be something you consider a strength. For example, maybe you already know you are loving, determined, patient, etc.
- Then look through the list you’ve created and pick 3-5 traits that you’d like to be. For example, here, maybe you want to be more confident, joyful, generous, etc.
- Now write each of those words down somewhere. You can write them all together or individually. Then find a place to put them where you’ll see them daily. (I have each of mine posted in my office.)
- Make a ritual out of looking them over every day as a reminder of who you want to be and how you want to show up. I touch mine each morning as I read them. I also will touch one in particular when I want to remind myself about something specific. For example, if I’m feeling uneasy, I might touch the word “peaceful”, take a deep breath and read it over a few times. Instantly, I feel more peaceful.
Doing this daily helps you put your desired character traits front of mind so that you not only begin to think them more, you begin to believe them for yourself and therefore, you begin to act as if…
My challenge to you this week is to make your lists if you haven’t already, get them up somewhere and start your new ritual of reviewing them at least once daily. You’ll be surprised at how this simple act can make a big difference. And when you do notice the shift start to happen, I’d love to hear from you. Come back to this page and share your new practice or experiences below.
