Masterful Mindsets ~ Clear Goals for a Clear Plan to Clear Success
“You’ve got to get clear on the WHAT before you address the question of HOW.” ~ Michael Hyatt
Question:
Do you find that you often get lost in route to your goals so you give up before you reach them? Do you struggle to create a clear plan for HOW to reach those goals? Are your goals (WHAT you want to achieve) too vague and unclear?
Action Challenge:
Last week I shared with you that the easiest way to find the best direct route to your desired life was by first knowing where you are and where you want to go. Once you know this, you can create a plan for success. So this week, I want to give you some key components necessary to setting clear goals that will help you reach that desired destination.
Sure, you can set a goal, but if it’s vague or unclear, then odds are higher that you will give up before you reach it. Why? Well, for one reason, think about this… If you say you want to lose “some weight” but you aren’t completely clear on what that means, then the goal is always out there somewhere in a grey area. There’s no finish line to say, “Hey, congratulations! You did it.” You never really know when you reach it and so after a while, you just sort of drift back into your old habits and lose sight of the goal. But if you are clear on the details of your goal, plus you know where you are starting, then you can devise a plan that will help you reach that destination.
Again, think about the GPS analogy from last week, you wouldn’t just tell your phone to give you directions to “somewhere” you would tell it to give you directions to somewhere specific – a specific destination. Otherwise it would be a ridiculous task and who knows where you’d end up. As a matter of fact, try it… your phone can’t even give you directions if you are not clear on where you are asking to go. Which is why you must have clear goals. When you have clarity and you know exactly where you want to go… then you can make a plan for success.
So how do you set a clear goal? You’ve got to make sure your goal is specific. The more specific the better. So again, you wouldn’t say, “I want to lose some weight.” You’d say, “I want to lose 10lbs. of body fat.”
You also want to make sure your goal is measurable. If you know you want to lose 10lbs. then you can measure that. You can’t measure “some”. You could even take it a step farther by taking your measurements and deciding to lose inches too. That way you know that the weight you’re losing is body fat and not muscle. (Muscle weighs more than fat so you may not lose weight if you’re gaining muscle. But the inches will show you the results.)
And you want to make sure your goal has a timeline. The timeline should include a deadline and milestones along the way. The milestones are especially important if your goal is big. This is a great way to make the goal more manageable. (I’ll be explaining why this is so important on my Facebook Live this week, so be sure you join me!)
So when you’re completely clear on this goal, instead of it being, “I want to lose some weight.”, it would be something like this… “I want to lose 10lbs. of body fat by March 1st. Which means I need to lose an average of 2lbs. a week. And I’ll track that by weighing and measuring myself every Monday.” This gives you a very specific goal that is easy to measure and monitor, and it has small milestones to be sure you are staying on track to the final destination (aka deadline) that you’ve given yourself.
When you have a clear goal like this, then you’ve already started to create a clear plan that is sure to lead to clear success. All you need to do at that point is determine the actions you need to take to get to your goal and then get moving. That’s where the rubber really meets the road… in the action! From there, you’ll be at your final destination before you know it!
My challenge for you this week… is to get clear on your goals, create that action plan and get moving towards your desired destination!
