Masterful Mindsets ~ Create Your Luck By Choosing Your Thoughts And Actions

“I’m a great believer in luck, I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.”   ~ Thomas Jefferson

Question:

What are your beliefs around luck? Do you believe that having good luck is out of your control and only the lucky ones can really have a life they love? Or do you believe that you are in complete control and that your beliefs, attitude and actions determine the kind of luck you have?

Action Challenge:

My daughters are both highly competitive athletes. You can usually find me at a field or court, watching them plan soccer or basketball, year around.

And like most parents, I always have a few pre-game words for them that almost always include these three phrases, “Play Hard! Have Fun! And Good Luck!”

So with yesterday having been St. Patrick’s Day, I thought it would be fun to discuss the concept of “luck” for this week’s Masterful Mindset. I mean, what is luck anyway? Is it really a thing or is it a matter of your own doing?

I do believe in luck – I can remember many times as a kid, looking in the grass for a 4-leaf clover. And hey, I grew up in the 70’s, so of course I had a lucky rabbit’s foot. (It was red and I loved that thing!) But I have long since let go of the notion that it was the rabbit’s foot that brought me luck or that some people are just luckier than others and that’s why they have success.

What I do believe is that part of luck is what you create for yourself. Notice in what I tell my daughters… I encourage them to play hard and have fun first. Then… the last thing I tell them is “Good Luck.” It’s not a coincidence that I say it in that order. It is for a reason! I believe that if they play hard and if they enjoy what they are doing then they will have a better chance at succeeding (aka winning). Which is why I say that first. Then at that point, a little luck couldn’t hurt. But mostly their belief, their attitude, their work ethic and their actions are what will make them winners (no matter what the outcome of the game is).

It’s kind of the same in anything you do in life. If you believe in yourself and your ability to achieve something, you have a good attitude, you’re willing to work hard and take action… sooner or later, you can achieve great things. And does having a little luck on your side help? Sure… but believing that you have that luck might be just the thing that manifests itself into the “luck” you receive.

So the next time you are being challenged, just before you take a risk or when you feel like you’re at the crossroads of success or failure… remember this, you can create your own luck by your beliefs, attitude, work ethic and actions. Will you win every time? No. That’s life. But you will have a better chance of coming out on top by remembering that it isn’t luck alone that makes a person successful.

My challenge for you is to examine your beliefs about luck. And challenge yourself to create your own luck. Through overcoming your fears and limiting beliefs (including the belief that you have bad luck). Through your own determination and discipline. Through focusing on what you want and having the courage to take unceasing action towards achieving it.
