Now on with how to keep your energy levels high throughout the day… One thing that might surprise you is that you can control your energy just by deciding to. Now don’t get me wrong, everything I’ve been talking about over the last few weeks is extremely important to increasing your levels of physical and mental energy and being able to sustain those high levels consistently over time. But when you feel your energy dropping, and you know you need a boost to get you through the day (think afternoon slump) you can quickly and easily increase your energy. And that’s what I’m going to teach you today.
Even though I strive to live a high-performance lifestyle, I still get tired. I am human! But I absolutely have more energy then I used to. And as I am quickly approaching the half-century mark, I think it’s pretty remarkable that I have more energy now then I did when I was younger. Heck, I have more energy now then I did 20 years ago! And I totally owe it to the fact that I made a very conscious choice to change my habits. But again, I do still get tired because I am human… And so are you. So how do you overcome or prevent yourself from getting into an afternoon slump? Or recover when you maybe haven’t had a good night’s sleep but you know you have to be on you’re A game first thing in the morning? You practice daily energizers! What are daily energizers? Well, little things you do throughout the day that give you a boost of energy. It’s these daily energizers that you can pull from as a way to maintain your energy throughout the day or to give you a shot of energy when that afternoon slump starts to creep up. Give these a try:
Stand up, move and stretch – every hour! Seriously, if you have to set a timer to remind yourself then do it. Getting up and moving every hour is hugely important to maintaining your energy throughout the day. Not to mention being a back saver!
Breathe! Yes, I know you do that naturally. But I mean really breathe… Stop what you’re doing. Close your eyes. Take 10 deep breathes, in through the nose and out through the mouth. Your body and your brain need oxygen to function properly but often we breathe shallow or when stressed can even hold our breath unintentionally. So taking time to consciously increase the oxygen to your brain and body can help restore energy throughout the day.
Be passionate! Increase your passion for life and you will increase your energy. Start with this, try speaking and gesturing with passion. Go ahead, try it. It will naturally boost your energy.
Smile! Yes, that simple… smiling and making others smile gives you a boost of energy. Take it even farther with laughing more often. Laughter isn’t just good medicine, it’s an energy booster too.
Show the love! Hugging and engaging with others is a great way to boost your energy and give the recipient of your connection a boost of energy too.
Focus on being present! When you put your focus on the present, you can consciously choose to have more energy in the moment. Think about where you are focusing. Are you worrying about the future or dwelling on the past? Or are you present and focused on the tasks at hand? Putting your energy into the moment instead of other spots of time (that you cannot control) gives you the concentrated energy you need to get things done.
Never underestimate the power of your words! Be aware of what you are speaking (out loud and internally). Saying, “I’m so tired.” over and over, only makes you more tired. Saying, “I’m alive, I’m blessed and I’m fully energized.” will likewise, boost your energy. So speak positive and energizing words.
Keep a gratitude journal! Focusing on the good in your life will naturally lift you up. (Just like focusing on the bad/negative will drag you down and suck the life out of you.) So focus on the positive and be grateful!
Be kind to others! Kindness feels good, it always gives me a jolt of energy to see that I’ve made someone smile or in knowing that I’ve causes a ripple of joy. Share your appreciation for others daily and be kind.
Guard your energy! Be on guard for people or habits that suck your energy. Hanging out with negative, grouchy people will suck your energy dry just as quickly as engaging in habits that steal your energy. Guard your energy by limiting your exposure to people or habits that are energy vampires. And instead connect with the people that leave you feeling great. And commit to engaging in habits that support your energy.
My challenge to you is to make an effort to boost your energy daily by committing to some of the above tips. Then be sure you let me know how they work for you. I also want to encourage you to go back through this series. Make a commitment to change some of your physical and mental habits to boost your energy. Stick with just a few and I think you’ll see a noticeable difference. Then you can add more and before you know it, you’ll be a high energy machine!
Speaking of more, there is so much more I could teach you on how to increase your mental and physical energy plus how to keep your energy levels high all day. But I’ll save that for another time. For now, I want to remind you to sign up for the Masterclass – 6 Secrets of the World’s Most Successful People
