Masterful Mindsets ~ Is doubt killing your dreams?

“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.”

Question:

Do you let self-doubt get in the way of fulfilling your dreams? And if so, are you ready to overcome it so that you can continue to pursue those things in your life that matter to you most?

Action Challenge:

As we continue our conversation on the monsters in our mind and how they get in the way of us achieving our success, this week’s topic of “Self-Doubt” is a big one. It can really overshadow you and get in the way of you pursuing your dreams or taking a leap of faith to go after what you want in your life.

The good news is, self-doubt can begin to be overcome by utilizing some of the actions we’ve already talked about recently. Here are three to get you started:

  1. Get Clarity – Get clarity and have a plan for how you’ll move forward. Being clear about what you want and why, will help you stay focused. Having a sense of direction and purpose help you keep moving, even when doubt creeps up. (See Clarity or Courage for more.)

Knowing what you want, being very clear about it, and having a plan for how to get there will help curb the self-doubt when you start to fall back into lack of clarity (“I don’t know what I want or what to do.”) That plan that you have in place, that clarity that you have about what you want and why you want it, is a huge helper in terms of moving past the self-doubt. It will help you stay on track to achieve your goals and continue on the journey towards making your dreams a reality.

  1. Eliminate Judgement – Quiet the inner critic and stop the judgement. Instead, look with an observer’s eye and learn from everything, especially your mistakes or setbacks. You don’t have to go into self-doubt and think you aren’t good enough or can’t succeed. You can simply see it, learn from it and move forward. (See The Monstrous Inner Critic for more.)

Stop the inner critic and eliminate the judgement about yourself. Look at your mistakes or failures as a learning opportunity by putting on what I call “an observer’s eye”, and see it through observation. As in, “this is interesting” – what worked and what didn’t, what can be changed next time or what needs fixing. Rather than judging that it was bad or that you’re bad, just observe and learn from every experience. Don’t let the inner critic take over and call you down.

  1. Have Faith – Having faith in yourself and believing in your ability to figure things out is an important part of having courage to overcome your self-doubt. You don’t have to know everything or be perfect. You just need to have faith in yourself and confidence in the fact that you can and will figure things out.

Instead of having doubt in yourself, have faith in yourself. Believe in your ability to figure things out. You don’t always have to know exactly how to do something, you don’t always have to have all the right answers and you certainly don’t have to do everything perfectly – you just need to have faith in yourself that you can do it and be confident that even if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can figure it out.

My challenge to you is to really be aware of when self-doubt comes up for you and how it stops you in your tracks. We’ve been talking all month about these roadblocks that come up that keep us from achieving our dreams and self-doubt is a big one. But you can get a handle on it by doing these three things mentioned in today’s Masterful Mindset. Start putting them into practice today and keep at it! Keep working at that courage… you got this!
