Masterful Mindsets ~ What’s Been Getting In Your Way?
“And perhaps our awareness is the first step to our liberation.” ~ Stanley Milgram
Question:
Why is it SO HARD to make lasting changes or jump to the next level of being your best? How can you step into your greatness? How can you identify what it is that has been getting in your way? And how can you overcome it?
Action Challenge:
Last week I challenged you to make a list of the things you’d like to change or that you know must change in your personal and/or professional life, in order for you to step into your greatness and be the best version of yourself. So if you haven’t done that yet, be sure you do because once you get clear about what you want your next move to be, then you can jump into it. Or can you? What holds you back? That’s what we are talking about today…
As I stated last week, the reason it becomes so difficult for people to make a change is because they spend most of their energy and time worrying. And I mentioned some of those possible worry questions to you. But today, I’m going to help you identify more specifically what they are so you can recognize them when they are getting in your way. The three main types of worry or fear that come up when we are pushed outside our comfort zone to change or grow are directly related to a fear of pain. The fear that taking the actions to make a change will be painful. Now you might think this sounds crazy but let’s break it down. Whether you are wanting to make a health change like exercising more or losing weight, a career change or seeking business growth, you want to improve your relationships or you even just want to figure out how to have more fun and stress less, it doesn’t matter what change you are seeking, the overall process is the same and the underlying traps that hold you back will fall into these three types of pain. So what are they?
- Loss Pain – Will I lose or have to give up something?
- Process Pain – What if it’s hard or I don’t know how to do it?
- Outcome Pain – What if I fail or things don’t turn out like I want?
My challenge to you this week is to look at that list of changes or goals you wrote up from last week. And write down all your concerns and worries that go with each of them. Then categorize them into the three main pain points. (Is it loss pain, process pain or outcome pain?) By identifying the pain points of your worries and fears around the changes you desire, you’ll be taking the first step to overcoming them. Awareness is the key first step to creating change and overcoming the things that block you from that change. Then next week, I’ll begin going into detail on Loss Pain and eventually we’ll examine each of these three most common types of pain that block us from stepping up in our lives. In the details of each, I’ll explain why it trips us up and how to take the next step once you have the awareness, to overcome that particular pain fear.
