Masterful Mindset – How to be a Successful Future Thinker

“Being a future thinker is great as long as you are also a present moment action taker.” ~ Michelle Weimer

Question:

Do you spend more time daydreaming about “someday” in the future then you do living today? Or are you so stuck in your current situations and problems that you can’t even envision a different future for yourself?

Action Challenge:

I believe it’s important to be a future thinker and have a vision for where you want your life to go. But sadly, many people spend their entire existence dreaming about a “someday” that always stays in their future.

On the other end of that spectrum, there are people who struggle to even be able to envision a different future for themselves because they are so stuck in their current situation or problems, which consequently are usually created from past experiences. By staying stuck in the problem, they never seem to take a forward focused approach to their life.

Can you relate to either (whether it’s just on occasion or always)?  If so, read on to learn how to become a successful future thinker…

Whether you are someone who has their head in the clouds, always dreaming of the future and talking about “someday” but never getting there, or you can’t even dream ahead to that future because you are so stuck in your current struggles to believe you can have it… there is one simple key element that can help you not only become a successful future thinker but perhaps more importantly, a happier person now.

So what is the key?

In order to be a successful future thinker, you must be sure you are also a present moment action taker.

It’s just that simple…

Let me explain, starting with the person who’s stuck in a perpetual loop of “someday”.

You can dream all you want. And I do think that dreaming about your future is important. But nothing changes until, as the saying goes, “The rubber meets the road.” In other words, action has to happen. And action happens in the present moment.

So, plan for the future by setting goals and creating a plan to take action. Know what your actions will be and what you need to do to prepare for those actions. Know when you will take the actions (i.e. schedule them) and the deadlines to complete them. Then start taking action. If you pair your future thinking with present action taking, you will be on the road to success in no time. And then before you know it, someday will be today.

Now as for the person who is unable to even envision a future of success because they are stuck focusing on their current situation and problems, the answer is still present action.

Here’s how it works…

Say you wish you could become a chef but you know that you can’t afford to attend culinary school. So you choose to shove your dream down into a corner of your mind and just spend your days working in a job you hate, resenting and regretting that you can’t be a chef because you have to pay the bills. Before you know it, that dream withers away and is lost forever. Sad right? But what if you started taking some type of action in the present that could fuel your dream and keep it alive? For example, maybe you cook creatively on the weekends or just like in the movie Julie & Julia, you cook your way through a French cookbook. With each meal you prepare, you are no longer focusing on the problem and instead you begin allowing that dream to fuel you. You take action in the present so that you can be motivated to keep that dream alive and once you are thinking about your future again, you can start putting your focus forward on a plan to make that dream a reality which of course… takes you back to more present moment actions that actually move you steps closer to successfully living your dream.

My challenge to you is to practice being a future thinker AND a present moment action taker.

If you are struggling with allowing yourself to even dream about the future, then start by taking an action that can nurture that dream. Feed it until you’re a thriving future thinker and the passion for your dream is strong enough to motivate you to be a present action taker. Then/Or…

If you are already a dreamer, sit down and line out your goals for the future. (I recommend you grab the Achieve Success System Starter Kit to help you through this process.) Then focus in on what actions you would need to take in the present moment to help move you one step closer towards those goals. Schedule your actions, give yourself deadlines and then start taking action today.
