Masterful Mindsets ~ So You Hate Your Job… Now What?
“If you work hard at a job you hate, imagine what you could do at a job you love?” ~ Michelle Weimer
Question:
Do you love what you do for a living? Do you even like it? If not, what needs to change? And why haven’t you taken action to change it yet?
Action Challenge:
As I mentioned last week, I am diving deeper into this conversation about work. It amazes me how many people not only don’t love their jobs, they don’t even like them. Work is where you spend at least a third of your day. Why would you continue to allow yourself to be miserable, day after day in a job you hate?
I talk to so many people who feel that they are stuck and can’t change careers even though they are miserable doing what they are doing.
I’ve even had several clients hire me because of this exact problem. They feel like their career is going nowhere, they don’t really love or even like what they do but yet they feel trapped into staying because they have bills to pay, they don’t want to lose their benefits or they just plain don’t know what else they want to do. They need a change but can’t seem to see how to change it.
The thing is, all the above “reasons” focus on the problem. The goggles of fear have been put on and they stay stuck staring at all the reasons why they can’t make a change instead of searching for a solution to make that change.
Many even claim they don’t know what else to do. But the reality is that often it’s not a matter of not knowing what else to do, it’s a matter of overcoming the fear of the actions they know they need to take and the uncertainty that comes with taking those actions.
So my challenge for you, if you are one of those people that is in a job that you not only don’t love but don’t even like, is to take off the “fear goggles” so you can truly see what your next action is. Now I’m not saying just run into your boss’ office and quit just yet. But pinpoint what is making you miserable. Recognize what you can and can’t change in the situation. Remember that you always have a choice. Then figure out what you would need to do to get out of that job. What would be your next action steps? (Get your finances in order, update your resume, start networking, etc.) And if you’re having a hard time looking past the fear, one of my favorite fear busting questions is “What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?” Dream a little and then start creating a plan to make that dream a reality. Imagine what you could do at a job you love…
