Masterful Mindset – Mental Energy Boosters

“The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” – Aristotle

Question:

What habits do you have that help you keep your mental energy high? Do you have clarity and focus all throughout the day? How do you manage your emotions? Ever noticed how the higher your stress level gets, the lower your energy gets?

Action Challenge:

We continue our mini-series on energy by exploring how to boost your mental energy because remember, to live a happy, vibrant, successful life, it’s important to consistently sustain high levels of physical AND mental energy.

To give you a clear picture, let me elaborate a bit on how they go together… If you are tired, you are going to struggle mentally to think clearly. Which in turn can affect your mood and your productivity, among other things.  (Hence the physical affects the mental.) If you are feeling stressed or emotional, let’s say you are worried or afraid of something… it will not only lead to mental fatigue but it will exhaust you physically too. (In this case, the mental affects the physical.) With both, your ability to live a vibrant, joyful life is compromised.

So, how can you boost your mental energy? Well, in my opinion, the two things that affect our mental energy most often are our emotions and stress. So today I want to share a few strategies to help you with that…

Notice what you spend your mental energy on and adjust your spending accordingly.

Here’s what I mean… Think of energy like a currency. If you only had $100 worth, what would you spend it on? Would you give your money to worry, regret, guilt, fear, stress, negative people, etc. or would you give it to the positive energy that will move the needle forward on your life? Things like love, happiness, peace, positive support, your purpose and passion.

Oprah Winfrey says, “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.”

You only have so much emotional energy each day. Become more aware of what’s really worth your energy. Don’t spend it on things that don’t matter. Adjust your focus and it can increase your mental energy.

Decrease your stress level in a healthy way and you will increase your energy levels (both mentally and physically) making your mind and body healthier.

Of course, we all have stress. How we manage it has a big effect on our energy levels. Unfortunately, too often people either ignore the signs of stress or they manage it in unhealthy ways – everything from procrastination and allowing distractions to emotional eating or self medicating.

I will admit, I have been guilty of it too. A lot! Seriously, when I’m super stressed, I can spend hours, even days procrastinating! But I have also found better ways to manage my stress and quite honestly, there are a few that have been game changers.

The one I’ll share today is one that is relatively new for me, which is meditation. Well… that’s not entirely true. Over the years, I’ve tried repeatedly to meditation. I SUCKED at it! Seriously, I had a hard time quieting my mind enough to meditate. I would find that I just couldn’t shut it off. And guess what, that mind chatter going constantly in the background is like a charger being plugged into a wall without a phone connected. It is always running and stealing energy with no real benefit.

But little by little I’ve found a way to meditate and I can tell you that quieting the mind has been extremely beneficial in reducing stress and renewing my mental energy. Not only that but it’s also helped me increase my clarity, ability to focus and creativity. (Added Bonuses!)

There is no one size fits all technique. In fact, there are many different ways you can meditate. I encourage you, if you don’t already do it, to give it a try. One of my favorite meditations was taught to me by my mentor, Brendon Burchard. It’s called, “The Release Mediation Technique.” I’d love to teach it to you personally, so be sure to join me on Facebook Live this week.

A few other strategies I recommend to manage your emotions or stress are:

  • Exercise (Yes, exercise is a mood enhancer and double bonus – it increases physical energy too!)
  • Journaling (Not sure where to start? I recommend a gratitude journal.)
  • Plan your days and what you will focus on. (Having a plan reduces the stress of what’s next and eliminates spinning in lack of clarity.)
  • Spend time in prayer. (Seeking guidance and being grateful or focusing on the needs of others, are great ways to start.)
  • Listen to music or podcasts that inspire you. (Music can be a powerful mood regulator so make different playlists for when you want to calm down or liven up. Then they are ready when you are, at the click of a button.)
  • Use essential oils. (Certain oils have tremendous mental benefits. They can calm your mind, ease stress, boost your mood, increase focus, etc.)

My challenge to you is to get clear on where you want to spend your mental energy. Start giving more of your focus to the positive emotions that will move you forward. Then choose a couple of the above suggestions to manage your stress and your emotions so you can increase your mental energy even more. Give them a try starting today!
