Masterful Mindsets ~ How You Spend Your Time is How You Spend Your Soul
“The decisions you make determine the schedule you keep. The schedule you keep determines the life you live. And how you live your life determines how you spend your soul.” ~ Lysa Terkeurst
Question:
Do you have a desire burning deep inside your soul but can’t seem to find the time for it? Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed BY life but feeling underwhelmed ABOUT life? Is how you spend your time in alignment with what’s important to you?
Action Challenge:
Time management isn’t just about organizing your tasks and your time. It’s about making soulful decisions.
We all have the same 24 hours in a day yet some people seem to waste their time or fill it up with things that just really don’t matter. For some it may be because they are people pleasers. So they don’t want to say no to others and consequently, put everyone else’s needs in front of their own.
For others, they may be stalling or finding distractions as a defense mechanism because they are afraid to do what they want for fear of failing. And then there are the people who just over-commit because they really do want to “do it all” but before they know it, they’ve gotten themselves into a state of over-commitment and overwhelm.
Perhaps you can recognize yourself in one or all of the above scenarios! But regardless of “why” you are overbooked and always too busy, the reality is… if you are feeling over-committed and overwhelmed then you are not making soulful decisions and therefore, your schedule is being dictated by disconnected decisions which means your life is being dictated by decisions that are not in alignment with what’s really important to you.
But for today, rather than getting stuck on “why” you may have yourself overbooked (which will just keep us focused on the problem), I want to talk about “how” (aka – solution focused) you can carve out more time in your life for the things that matter most and the things that make your soul soar.
So how do you get control of your schedule and your life? You make your decisions of how you’ll spend your time based on prioritizing, visualizing and organizing.
- Prioritize: What is important to you? – There’s always a corresponding no for every yes. This means that if you are saying yes to something, then you are saying no to something else. Be sure that what you are saying ‘yes’ to is exactly what you want to say yes to (usually something you value more) and that what gets the ‘no’ as a result of that, is okay with you too (because it’s of less value). If there’s a disconnect here, re-evaluate and adjust your decisions.
- Visualize: What is your vision for your life? – List out your dreams, your goals and your soul’s desires. Are the decisions you’re making for how you spend your time going to get you to your desired destination? If not, then what do you need to change? When you can see the big picture for where you are and where you really want to go, then you can plan your weeks, days, hours and minutes to get there a quickly as possible.
- Organize: How will you get it all done? – Plan out your goals and schedule your day accordingly. Be sure you are keeping your vision and priorities at the top of mind when scheduling your time. Having a schedule that allows you to be organized and efficient with your day will help you stay on task and away from distractions.
I’ll be writing more soon on helpful tips to organize your day for maximum efficiency. But for now…
My challenge to you is to take a look at how you spend your time. Make an assessment of every hour spent. List out how you spend your time and how much time is spent on each thing. Then prioritize and visualize! Are you spending your time on what you want to spend it on? Is what you spend your time on going to get you to your soul’s desire? If not, then make a decision on how you need to adjust your time based on your priorities and your vision. And then organize your schedule to fit.
