Masterful Mindsets – To Love Your Work is True Success… Happy Labor Day!
“Let us realize that: the privilege to work is a gift, the power to work is a blessing, the love of work is success!” ~ David O. McKay
Today is Labor Day here in the US. – Labor Day originated in the 19th century during one of the most dismal and difficult time in America’s labor history. It was an annual event to celebrate workers and their achievements. These days however, most people don’t celebrate their work or achievements. As a matter of fact, according to Forbes, more than half of US workers are unhappy in their jobs, so it’s really just seen as an extra (and often much needed) day off work. But when you love what you do, it’s worth celebrating.
For most of us, we will spend the largest part of our lifetime working. I started working when I was 14 years old at a family owned ice-cream shop. And from that point forward, I continued to work, experiencing several different jobs along the way. Outside of some time off after having my children, I’ve worked my entire life. Which is why I think it’s so important to love your work. I mean, let’s face it, if you are going to spend the majority of your lifetime working, you might as well be doing something you love and finding the joy and blessings in that work.
Think about that for yourself… Do a little evaluation of how you feel about your work. Do you work hard and show up fully committed to your job every day? Do you love what you do? Or do you go to work every day with a negative attitude, despising your job and every minute you spend doing it?
For me, my most rewarding careers have been after college – being a school counselor for ten years and then starting my own coaching business in 2005. I have to say that after 15 years as a personal transformation and success coach and now a Certified High-Performance Coach, I know without a doubt that I’m living my dream job. I love what I do! Sure, sometimes it is hard work, sometimes I have to do things I don’t love doing, and sometimes I work long hours. But all in all – my purpose and my passion shine through in what I do. My work is a blessing for me and I love it, so in my book, that is success and that’s worth celebrating!
As you reflect on the work you are doing in your life right now, also think about the parts of it that are rewarding and the parts that are not. Does the good outweigh the bad? Are you happy doing what you’re doing? Are you living your life’s purpose? Does your passion for your work shine through? If not, then what would you like to be doing? What would it take for you to be doing something you love and are passionate about? Maybe it’s time to go back to school. Maybe it’s time to polish up your resume. Maybe it’s time to take that leap of faith into doing what you’ve always wanted to do. And maybe, it’s just time to remember why you started doing what you’re doing. Get the passion back and gain a renewed send of love for your work. Whatever the case, if you don’t feel you love your work or that it’s your life’s purpose, then it is time to take action to change that. And if you do find after reflecting on your work that you love it, well then – Congratulations! Celebrate that because that is the true meaning of success! Happy Labor Day!
