Masterful Mindset – Scary Monsters or Unrealistic Fears?
“There are very few monsters who warrant the fear we have of them.” ~Andre Gide
Question:
Two simple but terrifyingly powerful questions to think about this week… What are you so afraid of? And are you ready to conquer that fear?
Action Challenge:
Think about the things that terrify you the most. No, it’s probably not vampires and goblins. But it could be the ghosts of your past: past bad experiences, past failures, past relationships that kept you down. Or maybe it’s the voices – you know, the voices in your head that judge you and tell you that you will FAIL; you’re not good enough, you’ll never have enough, be enough, do enough; you’ll never succeed; you’ll never be happy; you’ll never be loved. Wow…even scared myself there a little just writing those horrifying thoughts!
Here’s the thing, remember back when you were a child and the scary shadows of the night were revealed to be nothing more than a hanging shirt or stuffed toy when brought into the light? If you can shed some light on your fears, you’ll soon see that the majority of them are not as real as they seem either. Most of the time they are nothing more than our limiting beliefs and our ego’s best effort to keep us playing “safe” and small.
My challenge for you is this – turn the lights on! See your fears for what they really are… unreal and not nearly as big as they seem. Look those monsters in the eye and say, “I am not afraid of you!” Then take a step into the light, towards what it is you really want.
Here are your steps:
- Identify at least one fear you have. This might be done by asking yourself, “What if?” What if I take this risk, do this thing, make this change? What might happen?
- Then consider all the answers that bubble up. Are any of them truly things to fear? Are they life threatening to you or your loved ones? Are any irreversible? (Most likely the answers will be no because after all, most of our fears are imagined, not real.)
- This is where you turn the light on the monster. See the fear for what it really is and decide that you will commit to taking one step in the direction that you want to go.
- Identify that step (no matter how big or small) and take it!
- Celebrate that you’ve taken the step and the likely fact that even if it was hard, it didn’t kill ya. Then, keep stepping until you’ve reached your goal!
For most, failure is one of the biggest fears, but the worst failure is the failure to take any action at all. So, no matter what the outcome, celebrate that you took action and have the courage to keep moving forward in your life despite the fears that haunt you.
And you know what? Even if by chance things don’t go exactly as planned…remember this, the monsters will lose their power if you do not feed your fears. When my girls were little, we used to watch a Halloween movie called, “Girl vs. Monster”. In it, the monsters grow and gain strength when people are fearful. They feed off of fear and become stronger. But when people face the fear and do the thing they are afraid of, the monsters lose their power, shrink and die. Pretty powerful metaphor huh? So with that… go and do the thing you’ve been putting off because of fear! I have no doubt that your actions have the power to shrink your fear monsters too!
