Masterful Mindsets ~ Two Things You Must Know to Get to Where You Want to Go

“The easiest way to find the best direct route to your desired life begins with knowing exactly where you are and where you want to go.”

Question:

Is your life’s GPS working? Are you on the best direct route to reaching your goals and creating your desired life?

Action Challenge:

I like to think of creating a plan for success in life as a GPS System. And in order for a GPS to work properly, you’ve got to know two things first. If you don’t have clarity about these two things, you will inevitably struggle with true success. So what are the two things you must know?

Your Current Location – Where You Are (Self-Evaluation)
Your Desired Destination – Where You Want To Go (Your Goals)

Once you know that, you can identify the best direct route to your desired destination. But just try getting somewhere without that information…

Sure, you might still end up where you want to go but odds are it will take you longer and you’ll have a lot more frustration and detours along the way.

Yet so many people ignore the first part. They may set a goal, but they don’t take the time to really be honest with themselves about where they are starting from, so they miss the mark when it comes to creating a successful plan for achieving their goals.

Here’s an example – Say you are in massive debt and want to get out. It’s great to set a goal for that but if you don’t really know where you are then it can set you up for failure when it comes to achieving your goal because you may not be setting up your plan based on what’s best for where you are starting from. However, if you know where you are… then you can create a budget that works best for you to succeed.

If you start by doing the research so you know exactly how much debt you have, where your highest interest rates are, what your monthly income is and where your money goes each month, etc., then you can begin to devise a much more accurate plan to get yourself exactly where you want to go. (Again, think GPS – If your GPS doesn’t know where you are starting from, it can’t give you an accurate route to anywhere.)

Once you know exactly where you are starting from, then you’ll be able to get clear about which debts need to be paid off first and where you can cut some things from your budget. (Let’s face it, not getting that gourmet coffee every day before work can save you an average of $1100 a year!)  If you know that and you know where you want to put that extra money, then boom… you’re on your way to cutting down your debt and achieving your goal!

Knowing where you are, will help you create a budget that fits your life and your goals. If you don’t have that clarity, then what usually happens to people is they set up a plan that doesn’t accurately connect the dots between where they are and where they want to go. So they end up getting lost in overwhelm and giving up on their goal before they’ve reached it.

So remember, whatever your goals are for this year… you really need to be clear on two things in order to create the best direct route to your desired destination. Where you are, and where you want to go.

My challenge for you this week is to look at the goals you’ve set for this year and make sure you know exactly where you are starting from with each goal. Then next week, I’ll share with you some powerful tips on how to set up a clear plan for your goal’s success.
